Education or ignorance?

Long time ago when yours truly was in school (I love acting old. Don’t I??) , there existed one concept. It was mainly cultivated by those cynics who claimed that it’s difficult to score good marks in state board. Hence ICSE or CBSE (both being national level boards for secondary / higher secondary education) was “simpler” compared to the prevalent state board. I vehemently opposed to the concept that time, perhaps because I was in ICSE board myself.

But the fact remains that our education system needs to be revised. My humble opinion is that all boards should be merged into one. Probably that would be the only answer to this inconsistency existing in the nation. Marks are disbursed among students like crazy!! How does this system recognize true merit if almost 60% students from a school get +90% marks in their boards?

Another concern remains the introduction of English as a language in fifth standard in Government schools. I am not aware of the current implementation of this rule in the country. But I feel it’s absolutely horrendous to imagine a kid would waste first few years of his academic life learning sweet-nothings. However he would always expected to be as competent in the language as others who live by English since they step in schools. Generally the morale of the former is lower when he faces the world after a decade…a world where English is the lingua franca!

But I prefer being an optimist. I loved one particular line from a popular movie I watched in recent past. They say that no country is perfect; the citizens have to strive to make it so. True…..
It’s very easy to criticize and to leave the country for our own growth ….What is difficult is to stay here…to implement all the progressive ideas that breed in an educated mind. I hope someday we all realize that…Say Amen!

but yes i agree with u...
i see so many peers of mine who are otherwise extermely intellegent..struggle unfairly at certain things like the viva voce et al...
they work really hard...but ppl fluent in the language have an unfair advantage...
It shud be introduced in every board of edu in std 1..
I really hop ppl someday realise that and do something about it...
Amen..

very rightly said,...but who makes a system...thats us..
i agree with virtuvian...
what i see the education system abroad is superior apart from India having best of talents..is i guess coz of the freedom they have..freedom to do what u feel like..not like here that everything is being spoon fed..u need to mug up stuff which u dont hv interest in..thats sad..as it overall affects the enthusiasm towards studies...

nice post..keep it up

I am agree that our education system needs to be revised and to have only one boards
Throughout the nation would be the best thing to have. And regarding introduction of English in the Govt. schools .. I am the victim of that… I learnt first letter of English at my 3rd standard and gradually lost interest in the subject.. When English is getting accepted globally then there is nothing wrong to make it compulsory starting from the nursery standard instead of surprising the students as a BIG BOUNCER in the latter stage of the education.
Regarding your last paragraph, I would say only money motivate those pricks to leave the country all others are stupid excuses. End of the day definitely they earn more money but certainly not the Happiness.
One more piece of brilliance from you, this post is the best of your recent past.
Keep it up!!!

I totally agree with you!! I wrote a post on exactly the same thing long back, last yr when the board exam results were out! I was amazed how so many students got 90% or so, consequently many didnt get into the best of colleges despite doing so well!

Thanks for your comment on my blog.. :)

Hey love your post..
Ya i agree tht the State Board v/s ICSE or CBSE debate shall never end but the essence of the matter is that someone from a West Bengal Board (I gave that) will never get a 95%..Leave alone 95 the highest one gets after having stats, maths, accnts and 50 marks of business maths in a 6 subj format is 88%..n premier institutions like SRCC Stephens have their gates closed for us..always..

It's pathetic to see amazingly brilliant minds idle out at St.Xavier's Calcutta(it's just the name trust me)(at least Commerce here sucks evn tho the rankings show it as 4th allover india..) when they are meant to be in an SRCC, an institution which has been given the mantle of shaping India's economic future by our outgoing President APJ Abdul Kalam..

N yea..there mite be some state boards like Karnataka PU which gives high marks but Bengal Board is still behind..

n..Now cmin to da post back again..lol..i write too much..sorry..

Amazing isn't it..Everyone has a 90%..5 years ago parents wanted me to score a 90..today it's just a 7 percent high demand..at 97..and evn at 97% doors mite be closed at you if the seats are full..
i ll cm bk n write..gtg fer nw..

Miraj C. Vora said...

yea contd..hehe..

so its so ridiculous wen evry1 s scorin so high..

thre s this friend..she attempted 79 marks of accnts n got 95 and business studies in wich she attempted 100 nd surely expected a 99 wich she had got in all three terms preceding the board exam she got a dismal 54..
so not only the way things are shapin it's a concern for all of us..and checking is pathetic..in state boards u re paid less so teachers dont check well..
and in other boards they re paid more so they are lethrgic and grant marks like sweets..

Hope good sense prevails amongst the teachers who shape our future..and they dont neglect their duties..

Miraj C. Vora said...

and hey..
i m writin a post on this topic for sure..!!

Little Miss Muffet said...

yes..it makes no sense at all if there are different boards...many times a good student might lose out if he has received lesser marks from a tougher board..
and it is absolutely necessary for the states to forget their petty rivalry and ignore english coz it's a foreign language...in this global world, knowing english is a need-to-know and not a want-to-know.

My cousin scored 96% in ICSE. While I felt so happy congratulating her, I couldn't stop myself from thinking that I could have never scored something like this. Its true that many state boards, Punjab,UP,Bihar, WB etc have very strict grading.

Thats the reason we need the reform in education big time. There have been some efforts with IB having come in. But then again IB with its cost is only for the previleged few. But slowly we may also move towards the grading system. Lets say 'amen' to that.

Hey, sorry for blogrolling you without your consent, but i came through to your profile from phoneix and i liked your blog, so blogrolled.

I am of the opinion, good readings know no identities and permissions, all what matters is the connection to the mind and heart, and when I did read your posts, I instantly connected. So i added your blog. And same with other few blogs too, most of them dont even know about it, not sure if this is right or wrong.

Good blog this mate. Would visit frequently to this place. Thanks for your comment.

I completely agree with you. So many people object to English being taught because they perceive it as a 'foreign language'. In fact, by now it's as Indian as bhelpuri and spitting in public.

Pijush said...

Very good post. I have some points to share, though they are doubtable. If we make a single board common for all states, what will be the medium of teaching, English!! Another point about marking, it depends on which board we are, probably that makes the difference about the pseudo conception about which one is tougher. But, it really does not matter as we all have to go through same competitive exam after Class XII, and there the platform is same.
But I do not support the concept of introducing English in secondary level, I know the effects very well as I am a product of that system.
I have one feedback regarding your blog. Try to give some visual effect on your posts and better look and feel will make it perfect.

I agree with you on the English education front, but then when you consider the numbers which go without education, the former becomes more digestible. I mean, wouldn't they rather be equipped against slimy people getting their thumb prints on all the wrong papers than start speaking English? Lower self esteem is a phenomenon which definitely cannot exist if there's no realisation of self esteem in the first place? isn't it? I wish if only more people could be herded to schools, at least to recognise the language they speak on print. English or no English

The high scores r the skewed scores are an indication of what an assembly line education has become! Parents too want thr kids to study in scls that get ranks in top 10 of the city etc... but never give a second thot to what thr kid needs... Its high time parents introspect n take into regard the child's learning patterns, needs, requirements and abilities b4 chasing result oriented schools.

The whole scenario is entirely sickening when v realise that there is no inclusion of liberal arts in our curriculum and this omission is because of this run for results!

hmmm... i love reading comments for your posts. they (the posts) are awesomely so very real. but i somewhat disagree to the fact that the education boards should be merged. India has one of the best system that we can boast. though its true what you've written about the marking and language stuff, but aren't there students(as i might say) who have different interests, economical status and talents? they obviously need different platforms to study as per their requirements. and more to that, there's that parental guidance(blew!!!) thing that still makes student take up their courses...((my parents wanted me to be someone or the other....))

It might have been easier to implement 'progressive ideas' if everyone, or most, were pulling in the same direction, but if one is spent in countering opposite pull, more so if it comes from those ruling us, then there is usually little time and energy left to actually implement anything - most of it is then spent in merely retaining the status quo.

i totally agree with you priyanka di...i often hgave to face sniggers that..o u r from ICSE/ISC bpard...you guys hardly need to study..or that ur base is weak...moreover i have noticed all WEST BENGAL toppers [madhyamik/uccha madhyamik] are always from rural areas...where there they claim to get above 80% in eng in clg level they totally suck...does it mean city ppl dont know english....like you i too wish we have just 1 board throughout the country so that all are evaluated on the same basis...not just randomly.....nowadays even 90% is not enough...value for merit has gone down drastically..and there is no place for mediocre
